The W.D. & Shirley Schafer-Ray Educational Trust will award over $250,000 in scholarships to local students for the 2023–2024 academic year.
W.D. “Doug” Ray and Shirley (Schafer) Ray were passionate about their community and left a legacy of helping students meet their educational goals. After a lifetime of hard work, they established the W.D. and Shirley Schafer-Ray Educational Trust.
The Trust is dedicated to students from Adair, Adams, Taylor, or Union County with a portion of the scholarships devoted to students attending Southwestern Community College.
“Last year, we awarded 20 scholarships on behalf of the Trust. We expect to award even more this year.” explains Kim Baker, Trust Officer at Iowa State Savings Bank. “Their Trust is going to be around for many years and will make an unbelievable impact on our local students.”

Iowa State Savings Bank is honored to be a part of the Ray’s legacy by serving as trustee for the W.D. & Shirley Schafer-Ray Educational Trust. ISSB is accepting and reviewing applications on behalf of the Trust.
ISSB will award nearly $140,000 in scholarships on behalf of the Trust. Individual awards are expected to range between $4,000 and $12,000. Visit www.ISSBbank.com for the scholarship application.
Southwestern Community College
Over $110,000 in scholarships are dedicated to students attending Southwestern Community College during the 2023-2024 academic year. Scholarship applications for SWCC students are available through their Educational Foundation Scholarship application at www.swcciowa.edu. Students enrolling at SWCC are eligible to complete both applications.
Applications for the W.D. & Shirley Schafer-Ray Educational Trust are due March 15, 2023.
